Sunday in the Market With Marta
Well, things do change once the kids are in school. Only one week in and everyone is exhausted by the weekend. Saturday everyone slept. And slept. And slept. They had a very slow start. They sorted themselves out, did their homework and by Sunday, we were all geared up to do something.
Fall is definitely in the air around here. The weather has changed, the light is different outside, the leaves are beginning to start to turn color. After a good breakfast and a chance to read the paper, we headed out the door to the Farmer’s market. It was bustling and full of life. The produce selection had changed since the last time we were there. There were fewer summer fruits and vegetables and the apples were starting to appear. Only a fracture of the different types of apples that will eventually be available, but they are off to a good start. No pumpkins yet, but there was some squash.
The plant selection had also changed. Instead of tons of bright perennials to fill up your garden, hardy potted mums in their subdued colors were for sale. There were still the usual cut flowers available; my favorite are the gladiolas. They stand so tall and there is such a variety of colors. I could choose a different color for each week of the summer I think. I also love how they only reveal their fullness a few days after we buy them. It is as if once they are settled into our home and are comfortable that they begin to open up and show their true selves. We bought some bright pink ones. They are beautiful.
The colors of the market were so vibrant and there was the feeling of abundance. We walked through all of the stalls and bought apples to make a pie and applesauce – I told you Fall is in the air and now our kitchen will smell of Fall as well! We each had a delicious ear of corn and listened to the music. Our favorite Ecuadorian group was there playing. Sitting in the sun listening to nice music and eating good food. It was a great combination. I highly recommend it!
